my new goal keeps me running

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:31 pm by kaminski64 · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

I’ve written before about my attempts at staying motivated, keeping up my running or other activities, and the difficulty I’ve had keeping on a plan. I’ve signed up for events trying to keep myself engaged or focused, only to put off a run for a day… make that two days… uhm… I mean a week….

My new goal is to log 100 miles in a month (online Asics challenge if you’ve seen it at another running/exercise site). I’m writing to say, “HALF WAY THERE!”. For some reason, this goal has kept me going. Twenty-five miles a week? Ok… can’t put that off too much, but it’s not so bad that I can’t make up a little distance if I fall behind some.

I think this is the most I’ve ever run in a two week period. Even when I trained with some consistency for a half marathon I probably logged 23 miles one week and 18 the next (or vice versa), but not a steady 25 per week.

So, I’m stoked. I’ve going to finish off this month with another 50 miles as a good way to build my base, and then I’ll add a speed session/track work out to the mix. But for me (and I bet for most people), just getting the miles in is the most important part.

I’ll post again at 100 miles! :-)

new training plan

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:57 pm by kaminski64 · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

I’ve struggled to keep running on a regular basis. I sign up for events to try to motivate me, but then I just run the event without being fully prepared.

Now, I’m trying a slightly different motivation trick: I’ve signed onto an on-line challenge to run 100 miles in a month. Seems like this is pushing me to be more regular with my running, which no doubt I need in order to achieve the level of fitness I want to hit. Then, with a good base, I can run events with less struggle.

One week into this, I’m on track to log 100 this month.

still stuck in LowMo mode

Hey all,

Thanks for reading. I feel like typing out my thoughts. Having a few people read them helps me motivate. And that I need, cuz’ I’m stuck in LowMotivation mode again.

Actually, my motivation is not that low. I’m motivated and in many ways excited to run, but I feel I lack discipline. I just can’t seem to force myself to run in the times slots I intend to run in.

For those who have read me cry about this recently (minimal training for my recent half marathon March 8th), this may be more of the same (boo hoo ;-).

I had great intentions that after my last Half 2 weeks ago I’d keep up with my running with a focus on my next Half 4 weeks after the last (2 weeks from now).

But instead…. I haven’t run at all since the last half except for a 15 min run two days ago. (I was on vacation, I couldn’t run outside in that location, the treadmill access would have cost a lot of money, my legs were tired, no one was there to run with me, the elevation was too high, blah, blah, blah…)

So now I’m again planning on cramming at the end, sort of.

I can every day from this Monday to Friday (work won’t allow me to run this weekend or next). Then I can polish things up in the last week before April 5th. I’ll get in a mix of runs with three longer runs in the next week and a half before the Big Race.

If I could pull off March 8th, I’m sure I can pull off April 5th, and if there are no Tornado watches (like with the last Half March 8th), I’ll be fine. I’d like to run a time between my best (1:34) and my tornado time (1:48).

HERE COMES MONDAY…. 8 miles….

You’re comments and support help.

Regards

Half marathon report: ugly!

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:06 pm by kaminski64 · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

Ok folks, the experiment is over and the results are open to interpretation ;-)

I didn’t prepare enough for this half marathon. Sure, I stay in shape, but over the past 8 weeks, I probably ran an average of 6-8 miles a week plus an Ultimate game once a week for fun and for speed work.

As previously reported, I stepped it up last week and ran 10.6 8 days ago, then 6.2 four days ago (how to train for a half marathon in 10 days or less).

Ready or not….

The race was in Morehead City/Atlantic Beach NC and as anyone on the eastern seaboard can tell you, the weather is unbelievably bad. Rain, wind, tornado watch (literally). I was stunned that the race organizers actually held the event. I’m not sure what their plan would be if we actually had tornados mid race. How would you clear the course? I was very close to not running the event, but enthusiasm and stupidity can be a wonderful combination.

The cloud coverage actually started to thin some at the start. Wind was blowing 20-30 mph, but the first 5 miles was relatively protected. Then, we turned into the wind to cross the steep bridge over to Atlantic Beach. No protection, brutal wind, light rain. Light rain turning to medium rain. Medium rain turning into buckets of water. It was UGLY!! The race turned north with a slight trailing cross wind as the rain continued to drench us. This section was an out and back and after the turn that slight trailing cross wind felt like a brutal in-your-face cross wind. Many ran with their eyes half closed.

We turned west back to the main land for the last 3 miles. The rain eased and the wind was to our back. My T-shirt dried out (thank goodness for synthetics) and my feet didn’t even feel that wet, though they still felt very heavy. Whle the conditions were better, I felt pretty fatigued.

For this whole event, I took it pretty slow. I knew this wasn’t going to be any “PB” for me. With my lack of preparation and the foul conditions, completion would be sweet victory. I ran a 1:48 (8:18 miles). A far cry off my run last year (1:34 with 7:16miles). I did feel like I was bonking some and needed more fuel starting around mile 9. I chugged down some gatorade at the next three water stations and I finished feeling pretty good.

Then…. I must admit, I felt bad! a half hour after the finish and I’m still recovering 2 hours later. My belly got funny (let’s just say I had some cramping and leave the other details out) and my running partner said, “you look terrible”. That matched how I felt.

I’m hoping I can keep up my training on a more regular basis. Next HalfM? 4 weeks in Raliegh. Back to my old form for a 1:35!! See you there.

oh, if I could only motivate to do this more often….

Yup… I joined this site to help me stay motivated.
That won’t happen if I don’t visit the site every now and then, will it??
And my running/training won’t improve if I don’t run every now and then either, will it??

I’m writing now to express both pride in my accomplishment today and to declare my stupidity for doing it. I’ve been planning on a half-marathon March 8th, but I haven’t been running consistently nor have I been running any real distance. Three weeks ago I got pumped up and ran my longest distance of the past 3 months (about 6 miles) with the intention of keeping it up. That’s obviously a little late to begin to add milage for a halfM planned 4 weeks later. And guess what… I didn’t keep it up.

Instead, I ran 3-4 miles at a time maybe twice a week. I did continued to play Ultimate once a week (more fun and good speed work ;-). And last week, I played Ultimate all day, 5 games, in our local league tournament and tweeked out my IT band and aggravated a chronic pain where the gluts attach to the illiac crest. Sounds like a well thought out training plan, eh??

Now the stupid part I’m proud of… I went out today with a running friend and put in 10.6 miles.

There… I’m done. That’s my training for the HalfM. I figure if I can recover from today’s foolish distance I can run 13.1 also.

It breaks every damn training rule. I joked with my friend during the run about how much milage you should add during a training program (”you shouldn’t run more than 3 times your usual weekly distance, right??”) But I’m proud that my body could do it and that I feel ok right now. I guess my base condition is adequate.

I know I won’t set a PB on March 8th. That’s ok, I was using it as a training run for a later event anyway. But if I can clock a 1:45, I’ll be really pleased (I think it’s doable for me with one prior HalfM at 1:34).

Thanks for reading/thanks for support/feel free to write and tell me I’m a fool. I’ll let you know how I feel in a few days.

mellow recovery run

Posted in Run at 12:00 pm by kaminski64 · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

Great mellow work out to loosen up and see if everything is working. The Left hip and IT band seem to be OK with the Left hip feeling like it usually does (chronic muscle problem at the illiac crest attachment point).

After the run… I lifted for 25 min. First focused effort at the gym I just joined.

Ultimate tourney

5 games. I came up lame. Aggravated the attachment point of a muscle at me left illiac crest. Then, with that strained, I think the whole IT band got annoyed and decided to spasm and pull on my left knee in order to send me a message. Message received “don’t play anymore today”, but… 20 minutes later… loosened up some and back on the field.

Fun day. If I was only focused on my distance running, I’d tell you about what a great speed workout Ultimate is. More truthful is I run distance to help me stay in shape for Ultimate.

Fascinating… we can post anything on line these days, eh?
My goal is not to be public with my running unless it provides me with the needed support and additional encouragement that I think I need. It’s been hard to motivate to run. Putting an event on the schedule helps a lot, but I might have set my current goal too high: Half marathon March 8. When I set this goal, I had about 12 weeks. I started in pretty good shape - I stay active and all and run on occasion - but I know I need to get my endurance and mileage up. There’s the current problem.

Now I’m down to 3 weeks. Last year I ran a Half, trained about 2/3’s - 3/4’s as much as I would have liked, but even then that meant I had run 8 to 9 miles with 6 weeks to go and built up to 10 before the race. Now… max distance has been about 5.5 miles.

But all is not lost. My intention with this race is #1 to keep me running/motivated and #2 as a training step for the next race that I’ve already signed up for April 6 (or so).

So now… help me get the mileage up!!

I’m a man from Carrboro NC USA, born in 1964.

My goals are: Overall health, overall conditioning, with a focus on running. Last year, I ran my first half marathon at a 7:16 pace. I liked this distance (no interest in a marathon). I’d like to complete a 1/2 in 1:30

My other favorite activities include: Ultimate Disc has been the #1 interest for the past few years. Used to be very into cycling (mtb and road)..

Like many others… I’ve got a busy work schedule, a family, and other interests, too. Hard to balance it all at times.

This is my training blog which I am using to keep track of my fitness progress.

Please come by and read my blog. I hope it will help me stay motivated and keep me on track as I achieve my fitness goals!
